Build Your Brand Like A Boss!

If it’s your first ever gig, radio or TV interview and walking up on stage as an artist, put your best foot forward and see this as your opportunity to showcase who you are and what you have to offer.

Know within yourself that being unique & authentic will light up the room and will shine you and your talent. It’s your time to shine!

How to prepare your Artist Bio

Think about how you want to be introduced, marketed, and presented as an Independent Artist. It's a good idea to get an Artist Bio to compliment your personality, art form, and why you love what your talent is.

Artist Bios help you share your personal artist highlights, education, and a summary of your present creative work. This can help gain interests and prepare press releases, Radio/ Podcast / TV interviewers, Music Labels and can build a new supportive fan network.

A good tip is to use a neutral font like Arial or Times New Roman in 11 to 12-point size, and write in third person like you’re talking about someone else. Use authentic focus points in short paragraphs to share your thoughts.

Artist Bio Template

  • Your Name/Stage Name)

  • Where are you from? (Home or City you claim?)

  • What's your element? What are you best at?

  • When did you start doing music?

  • Who/What inspired you? (Can be other artists or past experiences, or anything!)

E.g STAGE NAME is a GENRE artist from YOUR CITY OR HOMETOWN, currently residing in CITY. Continue now with describing your style of music or genre and your own history and who or what inspired you.

How to create an Artist Image

How do you wish to represent yourself in a unique or casual way as an independent artist?

Think of how people see and recognise you now, either as an artist or as your everyday self. Do you wish to share the same every day visual image as an artist? Or do you wish to add more flare to your clothes, be it more colourful or styled more? Just remember to wear something that makes you feel good and expresses your authentic self.

Once you know your style, grab some pics (either professional or a friend who takes some great shots). Now you’re good to go!

EPK: Electronic Press Kit

Want the world to know you who you are as an artist? EPK (Electronic Press Kit) might just be your answer!

It's essentially everything booking agents, music publications, and other potential industry connections need to know who you are and what you’re about as an artist. A good EPK helps you share who you are as an artist & your music to your fans and opens doors into the music industry!

Check out this vid on 10 important things you need in your EPK:

Don’t worry if you don’t have everything listed in that video - if you have a good bio, good hi-res pics, a good video of one of your live performances, and a link to your artist socials and email address, that’s a great start!

Self Care

Just like in the rest of your life, you need to take care of yourself as an artist. It takes patience, but the process of practicing self-care does become really enjoyable.

To upkeep your balance as an independent artist and preparing for up-and-coming showcases, remember that stretching for 10-30 mins and walking is a easy way to exercise if a beginner. This will assist your breathing techniques for stage and take away nerves.

Think of the best ways you feel happy when feeling anxious or overwhelmed before a showcase, by listening to your set before, practicing with mock performances or vibe to your favourite artist and have a boogie or gentle breaths while meditating.

If you need more tips on self care, both on and off the stage, check out ReachOut’s series on self-care on their mental fitness site.
